KAITIAKITANGA

Become a Guardian for a Life in Transition

Join our foster whānau and provide a safe haven for animals in need. Fostering with Aotearoa Animal Refuge is an act of manaakitanga—offering deep care to every living soul.

Manaakitanga in Action

Fostering is the ultimate expression of kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga. By opening your whānau to a companion animal in need, you provide the bridge to their forever home. It is a journey of connection, healing, and shared love that transforms both the animal and the caregiver.

Secure Fencing

Kaitiakitanga means keeping them safe. A secure, fully fenced area is essential for protecting your foster animals.

Is Fostering Right for your Whānau?

Time for Care

Manaakitanga involves presence. Fosters need daily time for feeding, exercise, and precious bonding moments.

Transport Access

Kotahitanga is working together. Reliable transport is needed for vet checkups and occasional rehoming meetings.

Compassionate Heart

Whanaungatanga creates connection. A loving, patient heart is the most important tool for healing a rescued animal.

FAQs

How long do animals typically stay in foster care?

The length of stay varies depending on the animal's needs. Some may only stay for a few weeks until they find a permanent home, while others may require several months of rehabilitation or growth if they are kittens or puppies.

Can I foster if I already have other pets?

Absolutely. Many of our foster whānau have pets of their own. We work carefully to match foster animals with households where they will be safe and comfortable, considering the temperament and vaccination status of your existing animals.

What are the costs involved in fostering?

Aotearoa Animal Refuge provides all essential supplies, including food, bedding, flea/worm treatments, and covers all approved veterinary expenses. Your primary contribution is your time, space, and manaakitanga.

What support is provided to fosterers?

We provide ongoing guidance from our foster coordinator, access to emergency support, and a community of other foster whānau. We ensure you have everything needed to feel confident in your role as a kaitiaki.
